Warnings About Sexual Sins: Proverbs 5
“1) My son, give attention to my wisdom, Incline your ear to my understanding; 2) That you may observe discretion And your lips may reserve knowledge. 3) For the lips of an adulteress drip honey And smoother than oil is her speech; 4) But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword. 5) Her feet go down to death, Her steps take hold of Sheol. 6) She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.” Proverbs 5:1-6
Proverbs chapter five is dedicated to warnings against adultery and sexual immorality. This is an irony because Solomon ended up with tragic sexual bondage in his own life. He side stepped his own counsel.
His primary warning in this chapter is aimed at avoiding the trap of the adulteress. Solomon had many wives and concubines, but it appears that he avoided married women.
This is not an endorsement of fornication or polygamy. As a young man, Solomon was morally pure, but he ended up being caught and destroyed by the trap of sexual immorality. His foreign wives eventually turned his heart from God.
Sexual sins are among of Satan’s most common traps to enslave and destroy people. They also carry some of the worse personal consequences.
The New Testament equivalent to this chapter is 1 Corinthians 5-6. In this context, Paul includes many insights into the devastating consequences and deep personal bondage accompanying sexual sins.
In 1 Corinthians 6:13, Paul stated that the human body was not designed for immorality, but for the Lord. Later in that chapter he said the body of the believer is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The potential of this bond with the Holy Spirit is unfathomable.
Satan tempts people to exchange this spiritual bond for the lie that the body was primarily designed for sex. So many people worship sex almost as a god. This has been the big lie in every civilization. They forfiet the greatest purpose of life.
Both Solomon and Paul were warning that if you don’t control your hormones they will control your life. Sexual sins will take you down painful and miserable paths in life. Solomon said it is a path that leads to death.
That warning is not to be taken lightly. Many lives have ended at the hands of jealousy, rage, revenge, guilt, self condemnation, rape and violence directly connected to sexual sins. This does not include abortion statistics or the deadly consequences of some forms of sexually transmitted diseases.
God created sex within the context of marriage to be wonderful and fulfilling. Solomon elaborates on that in Proverbs 5:15-19. Marriage can be beautiful when approached God’s way, but it doesn’t work when blended with a host of sexual sins.
If you have been caught in this trap, Jesus Christ can bring forgiveness, freedom and a new life. He alone can turn ashes into beauty. He can wash away every sin and heal every wound. He can restore dignity and self respect. (See 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
