Happy Birthday America!
July 4th, 2026. Happy Birthday America!
This one is special for me. You see, I graduated from high school in 1976. It was the year of our bicentennial. We called it “The Spirit of 76.”
A special quarter was minted that year to mark our bicentennial as a nation. The Vietnam War had recently ended and attempts were being made to heal our nation.
But storm clouds were gathering. The voices of the anti-war protesters were still echoing in the streets. The election of Jimmy Carter brought artificial gas shortages with cars lined up for blocks at gas stations.
The environmental movement was launched in earnest. We started hearing about global warming and greenhouse gases. We were told the world petroleum reserve would be gone in less than ten years.
Meanwhile, the Cold War with the Soviet Union was strong and the nuclear arms race was accelerating.
But Americans were basically united. Optimism was strong. We were moving forward as a nation.
It was also the year I enrolled at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. I was full of youth, zeal, energy and hope. I was determined to make a difference in the world.
Some major events of the past fifty years included the fall of the Soviet Union, the pulling down of the Berlin Wall and the freeing of the Eastern European nations. Our world was changing.
But Ruby Ridge and Waco Texas marked the beginning of internal birth pangs for the United States. Government agencies were being weaponized against our own people.
Then the turn of the century brought the Y2K scare. This was followed a decade later by 9/11 and the bombing of the World Trade Center. Terrorist organizations were targeting America from within. In a strange way, this event united our nation.
Then came organized unrest, street violence, racial tension, BLM, men in woman’s sports and COVID. It came in like a tsunami. Nothing is normal anymore. Our world has radically changed.
But here we are, July 4, 2026. The past fifty years have been bumpy, but Old Glory still flys over the United States. I believe the hand of Divine Providence has not been withdrawn from our nation.
In fact, this is my only explanation as to why the United States still exists. I believe this is a critical time for our nation. I believe 2 Chronicles 7:14 is needed at this crucial time in our nation.
On this, our 250th birthday, join me in praying for national revival, awakening and healing. Despite all of our ills and foes, I love the USA.
