Curriculum for Royalty: Proverbs 4:1-6
“1) Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention that you may gain understanding, 2) For I give you sound teaching; Do not abandon my instruction. 3) When I was a son to my father, Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother, 4) Then he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live; 5) Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 6) Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you.” Proverbs 4:1-6
These verses give a rare glimpse into the teaching relationship of King David toward his sons. I suspect he loved and treated them all alike.
Solomon was the only living son between David and Bathsheba. He was the tender and only son in the sight of his mother. She highly favored him.
They both pointed him toward gaining wisdom and understanding. They directed Him to studying the commandments of God as recorded in the Law, which embodies the first five books of the Bible. Psalm 1 and 119 are examples of how much David loved the Law and meditated on it day and night. He wanted his sons to follow in his steps.
Keep in mind, all of David’s sons were royalty. They were being trained to be leaders and rulers. The same held true for Solomon’s sons after him. They needed the best education.
It seems that Solomon was saying in these verses that the book of Proverbs was a synopsis of his own education and training from his father, King David. He passed on more than wisdom and understanding. David tried to pass on his own heart and passion for God.
Let’s pull it together. What was the education curriculum for Jewish royalty at this point in biblical history? It was comprised of the Law, the Psalms and the book of Proverbs.
Today, we would add the four Gospels, the book of Acts and the Epistles. I will also add the history books of the Old Testament and the Prophets. Do you realize what you hold in your hands when you open your Bible?
The whole Bible is Gods curriculum for His sons and daughters. The Bible is the training manual for wisdom, understanding and success.
The older I get the more selective I am with what I read. My library has been reduced mostly to my Bible and a good concordance. I do occasionally read other books, but it is very purposeful. I am not a random reader; I’m intensionally focused on the Bible.
David talked about meditating on the Law day and night. I apply that to the whole Bible. I saturate my soul and spirit with the Word of God. I am daily in each section of the Bible.
Does it get old? Sometimes, but it builds, grows and deepens. The Spirit of God is constantly teaching and adding fresh insights. The Bible is so expansive my journey has only begun.
Make the daily study of the Bible a crucial part of your journey as well. Study like Royalty, because you are!
