Cursed or Blessed Families and Homesteads: Proverbs 3:33
“33) The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.” Proverbs 3:33
This Proverb has two biblical applications. Let’s look at each briefly.
At first glance this looks like it may be talking about the actual physical dwelling, but when you read the history books of the Old Testament (1 Samuel through 2 Chronicles), “the house of” is often applied to an entire family line. This is especially true for good kings and wicked kings. There are many illustrations of this principle throughout the Old Testament.
Exodus 20:4-6 is another example. God visits the iniquities of fathers on the 3rd and 4th generation of those who hate Him, but shows lovingkindness to thousands of those who love Him and keeps His commandments. The way we live affects our family.
However, there is a second biblical principle. The land and homesteads themselves are affected by those who own the land and dwell on it. God protects the boundary of the widow. (Proverbs 15:25) Do not mess with the boundary mark of a neighbor. (Deuteronomy 19:14; 27:17) The property of the righteous is blessed.
1 Kings 21:1-4 is an example of how Naboth looked at his land as the inheritance of his fathers and refused to sell it to Abab. The rest of the chapter is how wicked Jezebel plotted to steal the land.
Your land can be blessed or cursed. Live so as to bring a blessing on both your family and on your homestead.
Any time we move or buy a different house, we pray over it and bless it in the name of Jesus. We dedicate both the house and the land to His glory. Some Christians anoint a new house and property with oil. I like that practice.
