From the Field: Hurricane Matthew, Focus on Agriculture

FROM THE FIELD:
GoServ Global works with Les & Catherine DeRoos (Laborers With Christ), missionaries from Iowa who serve full-time in Haiti. In this video, Les, an agronomist, talks first-hand on what it was like to go through Hurricane Matthew and discusses the current needs in Haiti with a special focus on agriculture.

ONE WEEK LATER: Before & After Hurricane Matthew, Haiti

One week ago so many of you joined our loved ones in Haiti to pray for a miracle … that they would be safe during the Category 4 Hurricane Matthew that hit Les Cayes, Haiti with 145 mph winds.

Each day throughout the week provided more miracles …

*that in fact all of our beloved orphans, widows, and staff were ALIVE!

*that all 200 Safe T Homes were standing strong with just minimal damage, while only about 10% of traditional homes remained

*that the Safe T Homes saved countless lives as community members crammed into the space to ride out the storm (we hear as many as 60 people in 1 home!)

*that many of our buildings lost their roofs, but weren’t a total loss

*that people around the US donated; food and supplies were purchased, and our first relief team was able to fly to Haiti in just a matter of days

Thank you for your support. Please continue to pray for our loved ones and our ministry as the road to rebuild will be a long one.

Center of Help Orphanage Hit Hard

We first began helping the Center of Help Orphanage in Les Cayes, Haiti back in 2013 when we learned they had lost their funding and were literally starving. Hear from GoServ Global Board Member Conwell Larson as he shares about that time, and see updated pictures of how Hurricane Matthew ravaged the orphanage.

Praise God all of the children and the staff survived, but their “traditional” homes are greatly damaged. For the time being we have moved all the children and staff to our other orphanages.

Please continue praying. Financial donations are the most effective way to help GoServ Global at this time as we are able to purchase food and water in country! www.goservglobal.org/give

The Village of Hope is made up of 60 Safe T Homes and is in a rural part of Haiti on a wide-open piece of property as you can tell from the overview shot. The gazebos didn’t survive, but the Safe T Homes® are still standing strong.

We’ve been told that area community members crammed into these Safe T Homes as well – up to 60 people – and countless lives were saved!

Safe T Homes® Withstand Hurricane Matthew

In the background of these pictures are Safe T Homes® at Joshua House Boys Orphanage and James 1:27 Widows & Infants Village. In the foreground are the gazebos where our babies were rocked and our children played.

100% of our Safe T Homes® remain standing, despite the 145 mph winds that ravaged Les Cayes. The surrounding community didn’t fare as well as only around 10% of the homes remain.

Up in the mountains, the John 3:16 Village contains 18 Safe T Homes. Lives were saved as up to 60 people from the surrounding community crammed into each Safe T Home® to ride out the hurricane. Most of the town of Camp Perrin is gone.

Please continue to pray …
for funds to rebuild
for a way to get supplies of food and water to our loved ones
for protection from cholera, dehydration and other diseases

Hurricane Matthew Hits Haiti

UPDATED: NOVEMBER 10, 2016

Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest hurricane in a decade with winds up to 145 mph, hit Les Cayes, Haiti, where Iowa-based GoServ Global rescues the vulnerable – orphans, widows, abandoned babies, displaced families, etc.

We are so thankful to report that all of our orphans, widows and staff are alive! Approximately 10% of the traditional homes in the area were left standing after the hurricane, while all Safe T Homes® (nearly 200) withstood the hurricane with just minimal damage! The Safe T Home® saved lives in our villages as people from the community crammed into the home to ride out the storm (as many as 60 people in one Safe T Home®).

Safe T Homes® are one of GoServ Global’s main priorities in Haiti. Each Safe T Homes® costs $5,700 plus $1,000 to ship, and about $300 for cement. So altogether to purchase 1 Safe T Home® and get it from Sheffield, Iowa to Les Cayes, Haiti costs $7,000.

10 Safe T Homes® fit in one shipping container. To give to the Safe T Home®, click HERE and choose “Safe T Home®” in the dropdown.

GoServ Global projects did sustain major damage to our traditional buildings as most of the roofs are gone. In addition, many of our crops, livestock like chickens, rabbits, and fish farm are gone as well as all the fruit trees are destroyed. However, the Centre de Vie Church located in downtown Les Cayes with Pastor Rivenson Dige has very minimal damage and a held church service just a few days after the hurricane! Most of the churches in the area are damaged beyond use.

Since Hurricane Matthew, several GoServ Global teams have served to help with the aftermath, building 4 Safe T Homes at the Center of Help Orphanage that was virtually destroyed. In addition, teams have replaced roofs on many buildings and unloaded the first of several shipping containers to reach Les Cayes.

Just a few days after Hurricane Matthew, Co-Founder Ken DeYoung flew a small crew and much-needed food, water, and other emergency supplies to Les Cayes. Below is a picture of Ken and Board Member Conwell Larson with some of the boys at the Joshua House Boys Orphanage with the Safe T Homes® in the background.
